New EELS Record Drops Today, Streaming On MySpace
We've been getting pumped about the latest EELS disc, Tomorrow Morning, for quite some time. Well now the day has finally come - the album hits record stores today, just in time for the band to start a fall tour. But that's not all: the band isn't taking for granted that you'll buy into their latest musical endeavor, and so the disc is streaming at the band's myspace page.

EELS Stream Another Track From Tomorrow Morning
We already mentioned that EELS had a new record on tap for the end of August, and previewed the retro-sounding "Looking Up". Well, now the band has dropped another track from the record entitled "Spectacular Girl", and while it's nothing like the previous track, it is pure classic EELS gold.

EELS Drop New Track From Tomorrow Morning
The latest from EELS, Tomorrow Morning, doesn't drop until August 24th, but that doesn't mean you have to wait: the band has dropped the first track from the record, and it's a doozy. Uncharacteristically optimistic, "Looking Up" employs Mr. E's recently-preferred vocal distortion along with a peppy boogie-woogie piano line. Oddly, the end result is something that reminds us slightly of vintage Stones, with Mick taking a hiatus. Sadly, it doesn't seem to move past it's initial vibe - to say it's compositionally simple would be an understatement.

EELS: "In My Younger Days" - Video
We have to admit, this ditty caught us offguard as being a tad bleak, even for the often morose Mr. E. Ball that up with a video (above) that is a rather bleak take on a trip to the pet store for some dog food, and well, let's just say this: we're kinda expecting that End Times (which drops on 1/19), may not exactly be a disc of rollicking ditties.
Nevertheless, some of E's moments have been his darkest, so this isn't exactly a bad thing. It's been quite a while since he's truly revisited what many to be consider his signature sound, and it may just turn out that End Times is the record a lot of people have been waiting for.

New EELS Track Hits The Web

EELS have their second record in the span of a year on tap for January, and now it's starting to make its way on to the interwebs. End Times drops on January 19th, and the band has just released the first single from the record, "Little Bird", for free download.

EELS On Track To Release Another Record: End Times
We have to admit, we thought it was a bit strange that when EELS released Hombre Lobo there was no hint of a tour. Well, now it appears we have our explanation: Apparently Mr. E was at home in Los Angeles recording a second record entitled End Times.
The record consists "largely" of home recordings by Mr. E in his basement studio, and is set to drop on January 19th of the new year. That's about all the info we have for you at the moment, so other than that you'll have to just hold your horses and be satisfied with the knowledge that there's more new EELS in your future!

Live EELS: World Cafe Performance and Free MySpace Transmissions EP
Mr. E has been out diligently making the rounds in support of Hombre Lobo, and the result is a ton of new live material for you to chew on. Specifically, the EELS frontman made a stop at NPR's World Cafe, and MySpace's Transmissions. While the sets do completely overlap, the MySpace set adds the addition of a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Girl From The North Country" and is available as a free five song download. What's more, the set is apparently being released on vinyl September 1st with a sixth bonus track, "The Longing".
While we're psyched to have all this new material, we have to say that we're a bit bummed that E's appearances (with the exception of "Tremendous Dynamite") continue to play up the chill, piano-playing, balladeer vibe. We were really excited when Hombre Lobo was demonstrating a bit more of a rock and roll vibe, and kind of figured E might be back in that state of mind. Nonetheless, we're willing to keep our hopes up.
As of yet, no tour has been announced for the record, so maybe (please?) there's a full rock band in the works.

New EELS Video - "In My Dreams"
Okay, obviously we're not calling the shots on EELS' singles, because if we were, they wouldn't keep avoiding the RAWK like the plague. Seriously, Hombre Lobo is a raucous, fun affair, and yet the band seems intent on continuing to push the uber mellow "In My Dreams" as the current face of the EELS.
Combine that with the fact that it's not just a mellow single, but the video is a cutesy montage of a (presumably) young Mr. E walking about the forest. Come on! Really?
Shit baby - give us "Fresh Blood" any day!

EELS Played Letterman - Video
EELS appeared on Letterman last night, and we are sorry to say that the rock level was minimal. We don't know if it was the preference of late night TV, an attempt at wider accessibility, or just that E was feeling un-rock. Regardless, we were a little bummed to see E had picked one of Hombre Lobo's more chill numbers, "In My Dreams", for the appearance.
Not only was it a chill number, but the arrangement was sparse as well - just a drum kit, and E on the piano. Which is not to say it wasn't a solid performance: the song is charming, E sounded great, and as mellow tunage goes, it was top notch. That being said, given the vibe of the new record, we were just hoping for something with a bit more kick.

EELS Are On Letterman Tonight
Here at HAD we just received word that EELS will be appearing on Letterman this evening. While we'll be sure to hook you up with some nice HD streams of the appearance as soon as we get them, we still have to encourage you to check out the live appearance. Somehow computers never seem to convey the full vibe as well as a nice big TV.
While there are no guarantees, we'd put some money down that E will be delivering the record's first single, "Fresh Blood", and we couldn't be more excited. It's been a number of years since we've seen E truly rock, and we can't wait.
In other news, Hombre Lobo managed to put in a respectable appearance at number 43 on the Billboard 200. This not only solidifies our thoughts that indie rock is taking over the world, but also that the public loves the rockin' E as much as we do. Natch.

EELS: Hombre Lobo
There are two sides to the EELS equation: one is the quirky, quiet, depressing Mr. E, while the other is the rockin', balls to the wall, ready to take it on the chin Mr. E. The latter is the side of the equation is the piece that has always gotten more attention, and many of E's most lauded work is that which falls into the "sad sack" category. What's more, for the past few years (or more) E has indulged his more mopey side almost exclusively. Between Blinking Lights, EELS With Strings, and E's curmudgeony on stage persona, he's clearly been indulging his inner mope.
Which is not to say that's a bad thing: there's certainly merits to E's more serious compositions, and they have certainly helped to define him as a songwriter. Still, we're surprised that it's the side that gets the most attention. The fact of the matter is that E on a good day has far more depth than E on a gloomy day ever would. Sure, on their surface the more rocking compositions come across at first like less "artistic" fare. But the fact of the matter is that the rocking compositions still contain the emotion and insight of the ballads, they just deliver it with a dose of sarcasm, wit, and acceptance. It's that ability to confront demons that we love so much about E's rock persona, and it's why we couldn't be more happy that it's back with Hombre Lobo.
Before his current journey into mope-land, E spent quite a few years in his rock and roll boots. Souljacker and Shootenany were a pair of records designed to rock, and they did so with perfection. While Souljacker has held up better over the years, both records serve to illustrate just how well E's rock and roll songwriting can deliver. What constitutes E's rock sound is difficult to sum up, but we'd point out a few notable elements. Fuzzed out guitars, upbeat ballads, and drums that are full of punch and character: all of these serve to bring the songs up a notch, and allow them to transcend simply being about loss. Somehow, they manage to become catchy songs about loss. If the return of E's "rock beard" wasn't enough of an indicator, then we're happy to confirm: Hombre Lobo could easily stand as the third piece in this rock and roll trilogy.
From the first notes of "Prizefighter", it's clear that E is on a rock kick, and the momentum continues with "Lilac Breeze", "Tremendous Dynamite", "Fresh Blood" and "What's a Fella Got To Do". All of those tunes are rife with enough unapologetic fuzz and blues influence to make you smile by themselves. Nonetheless, interspersed between the rockers are some truly solid Mr. E ballads. Most reminiscent of the ballads on Daisies Of The Galaxy, these tunes are upbeat, with singable melodies and lilting beats. In short, it's a long way from the morbidity of Blinking Lights.
It's worth mentioning in the context of this change in direction that this is also probably the album in the EELS catalog that most recognizes E's classic rock and roll roots. Sure, he's covered "Fingertips" and "Loser" in concert, but on this record you can really hear that sixties influence in earnest, and it works. "Beginner's Luck" could be straight out of 60's Mowtown, and the record's melodies scream with classic sixties charm. The idea that a song can be catchy and tragic is really very much a hallmark of the sixties, and it's nice to see EELS unafraid to break away from the earnestness of emo.
At the end of the day, we don't really share the common endorsement of E's mopier fare; We couldn't be happier to see him back on what (to our ears) really feels like the "right" track. Sure, it's catchy, and to some that points painfully in the "sell out" direction. But the reality is that E's ability to dig into his emotions and reimagine them with a sweeter wrapper is a huge part of his charm and talent. What's more, his snarky sarcasm just wins us over every time. We couldn't be happier to have the "rock E" back - now we just need to catch the tour!

Stream The New EELS, Hombre Lobo On MySpace
Well, we've been getting more psyched for this one by the day, and now it's finally here. EELS have decided to stream the entirety of their new record Hombre Lobo over on their MySpace page, and it's tasty, to say the least. We'll be giving our in depth thoughts on the record next week, but for now suffice it to say that Mr. E is back with some attitude, and it's all good. Go check it out now!

New EELS Video: "The Look You Give That Guy"
We have to say, every indication we get for the new EELS record Hombre Lobo just keeps on solidifying our opinion that it's gonna be E's best since Souljacker. The lastest entry? An "at home" film of the track "The Look You Give That Guy". The track is classic EELS, with a sweet melody an almost-drum-machine beat, and humorously self-loathing world view. Lyrically it's in the tradition of the "other guy" genre: "Here Comes The Night", "Is She Really Going Out With Him?", etc. Most importantly: it's straight up awesome. Click above to watch and listen.

EELS Drop "Fresh Blood" Video
What do you do if you're on the verge of releasing a sick rock album, and you live in LA? Well, if you're EELS frontman Mark Oliver Everett, you take your digital camcorder and make a creepy ass video of you stalking a lovely woman and fighting some Mexican wrestlers in the middle of the night. Because that makes sense, right?
We have to say, that after the drudgery and earnestness of Blinking Lights, we're really glad that it appears as though Mr. E's sense of humor has returned. While there's no question that the man can write a solid tear jerker, his more sardonic side has always been our fave. Every hint we get of it gets us more psyched for Hombre Loco by the day!

Trailer For New EELS Documentary "Tremendous Dynamite"
If the folks in the EELS camp are attempting to get us ridiculously psyched for their new record Hombre Lobo, it's working. The band recently posted a trailer (above) for a documentary entitled Tremendous Dynamite, and it's very tasty.
The video contains a sizeable portion of the title track from the record, along with images of E suited up in welding goggle goodness. The track itself is full on Souljacker-era rock and roll, complete with fuzzed out vocals and stamping march beats. Which is to say: we love it.
Check it out, and be stoked. To the max.

EELS: New Track, "Fresh Blood", New Record, Hombre Lobo, In June
To be perfectly frank, we were kind of starting to lose faith in EELS. Between a memoir for grandchildren, a double record of super mellow tunes, and a acoustic-y tour with strings, it seemed like good old Mr. E was getting soft around the middle. Well, have no fear: today E dropped the single off the band's first record in four years, and the edge is very much back.
"Fresh Blood" is the first track off of Hobre Lobo - 12 Songs Of Desire, which drops on June 2nd. The track is classic E - all droll delivery, double tracked vocals, and drum machine beats until there's an awesome freakout at about the one minute mark. From there it wades in and out of eerie synth lines, feedbacking guitars, and of course, howls.
There's no question that the track definitely encompasses the more "rock" side of E's personality. While those who are huge fans of the more downbeat E might find themselves dissatisfied, those of you who dig on the rock and roll will most certainly be loving it. What's more, if this track is any indication of the direction the record's taking, well, frankly, we couldn't be more excited. We've been waiting for this one for a while.

New EELS Track: "Man Up" On The Yes Man Soundtrack
Word just came over the wire that there's a new EELS track on the soundtrack to the new Jim Carrey/Zoey Deschanel film Yes Man. The track is available as a myspace stream at the moment, and we just had a listen. Frankly, to our ears, it's pretty boiler-plate EELS. That is to say, probably a fair bit better than 90% of what's out there, but pretty forumlaic for Mark Oliver Everett. Mellow, semi-spoken verses with strummy guitar, followed by upbeat catch phrase ("It's time to man up!") chorus.
Don't get us wrong, we're always glad to hear some new EELS, but this track seems to be ideally suited for how it's been used: as soundtrack-quality filler. That being said, don't take our word for it: head over to myspace and check it out for yourself (it's song number two in the player)...
