New Doves Video: "Winter Hill"

It's been three months since Doves dropped Kingdom of Rust, and the band is still going strong on its release. Case in point: the latest single/video from the record, "Winter Hill".

We love the tune (especially live), so we're certainly not putting up a fight. That being said, we are moderately flummoxed as to why the video focuses on a trick BMX rider. Nonetheless, that shit be cool to watch, so again, no arguments.

In other news, the band's website was apparently hacked recently, which has left them relegated to a temporary blogger domain for the time being...stupid hax0rs!

We're still reeling from Doves' show at The Fillmore, so we were psyched to be able to catch them the other night on Jimmy Fallon performing "The Outsiders". The performance is surprisingly awesome for a TV spot, and we have to say, the band just continues to deliver in spades. Click above to check out the vid.

Perhaps not quite as monumental as The Fillmore show, HAD reader Dave had this to say: "Good show by a great band, but not the best mix, perhaps due to the venue." Doves Played The Fillmore - Pictures, Review, Setlist

On Monday night, Doves dropped in at the Fillmore. San Francisco showed them the love, and they showed it right back. Over the course of an hour and a half, the UK trio (joined by a fourth on keyboards) delivered an energetic set that clearly left both the band and the crowd more than a little enthusiastic. The set drew from all over the band's catalog, from the opener "Jetstream" to the closer "There Goes The Fear". As well as being highly entertaining, it was also a testament to just what a great body of work the band has amassed over the past ten years.

Seeing Doves live is something of an eye opening experience if you're only familiar with the records. The band's studio recordings tend to be highly manicured, layered affairs that seem largely devoid of a "personal" side. Put differently, the band's records can seem a bit icy at times. By stark contrast, the live experience is so full of vitality that you might be shocked if it was your first time seeing the band in person. They so clearly enjoy playing and interacting with the audience, it's a wonder they don't tour more often. On Monday night, it was obvious that the smiles and enthusiasm on both sides of the stage were as genuine as they come.

Obviously, however, enthusiasm can only take you so far, and at some point you need to match it with technical skill. Lucky for them, Doves has it in spades. It's enough of a miracle that the band can reproduce their sound live, but that they can do it so dynamically and accurately, and then add a layer newness on top is simply stunning. The band are all multi-instrumentalists, with everyone singing, adding percussion, and generally working together to create a massive soundscape. To see the trio all singing, while at the same time laying down blistering bass, guitar, and drum parts was a sight (and sound) to behold.

Despite not having a big American chart presence, Doves have manage to carve out a solid American fan base, and it's frankly easy to see why. Their records are carefully crafted and released as they see fit, and then backed by tours that emphasize the strengths of the record so strongly that it's impossible not to find yourself clamoring for more. To be frank, our only complaint is that the band doesn't make their way across the Atlantic more often - we'd love to see them again soon.

New Doves Record Drops Tomorrow, Streaming On MySpace

We've been getting progressively more psyched over the past couple of months for the release of the latest Doves record Kingdom Of Rust, and the record finally drops tomorrow. As such, the band is also streaming the entire thing over at their myspace page, so you can definitely get a fair and reasonable taste of try-before-you-buy. Tasty indeed.

Doves Plan Spring Tour: Fillmore In May, Presale Next Week

We've already made mention of the new Doves record Kingdom Of Rust that's set to drop on April 7th. Well, now things are really starting to heat up: We've been listening to the record (and digging it quite a bit), and the band has released the inaugural video (see above).

On top of that, news has just dropped that the band will be making their first US tour in almost 4 years in support of the record. Over May and June they'll cover both coasts, with one or two stops in the midwest for good measure. There's also apparently a presale at Astralwerks starting March 11th, with the password "Jetstream". While we can't exactly discern where one would go to for that presale, we'll keep you in the know once we figure it out.

Presale or regular sale, we can assure you that this is one band you won't want to miss. Their live show is unequivocally solid, and the rarity of their appearances on this side of the pond makes it all that much more special. For you Bay Area folk, that means an appearance at the Fillmore on May 18th. For everyone else, read on....

Doves Have New Album On The Way, US Spring Tour In The Works

We here at HAD have been big fans of Doves ever since 2002 when they released The Last Broadcast. Let's just say we already liked the record, then saw them live (with My Morning Jacket opening, no less!) and were completely hooked. Since then, they've released a steady (albeit slow-to-market) stream of fantastic records that artfully bounce between genres, and manage to define a unique sound while at the same time remaining remarkably accessible.

Things on the Doves front have been pretty quiet since the release of 2005's Some Cities (like we said, slow-to-market), but now word has come over the wire that the band has completed recording a new record entitled Kingdom Of Rust, and we couldn't be more pleased. The record is set to drop on April 7th, and is going to be accompanied by a US tour in the late Spring (dates TBD). That's a bit of a long ways off, but have no fear: the band has made the first single, "Jetstream" available for free download at their website. We could give it to you here, but we hate sabotaging bands that are cool enough to give things away for free.

The tune is completely classic Doves, all sneering vocals and layered guitars underpinned by driving percussion. That being said, there's also something of a new element: more synths, more electronic beats, and a bit of a general departure from their more traditional rock sound. In short, we really dig the track, and we're curious to see if its new feel carries over to the entire record.
