Wilco and Nick Lowe Played Central Park - Pictures, Review, Setlist

Last night we stopped in at Rumsey Playfield to catch the first of Wilco's two nights in New York.  The band is helping to close out the final days of the year at the Central Park venue, and despite predicted rain, the evening managed to go off without any serious interference from the weather.  Alongside the band was legendary musician and producer Nick Lowe.  The band recently covered Lowe's "I Love My Label" as a B-Side to "I Might", and apparently dug doing so enough that they decided to bring him along for their inaugural tour under dBpm Records.

Nick Lowe was touring without a band, and delivered a set in true singer-songwriter style with his voice and a lone acoustic guitar.  Much akin to his longtime friend and collaborator Elvis Costello, Lowe can still command a crowd even with such simple implements.  Lowe's voice is unquestionably in top form, and hearing him live was a real treat; Roy Orbison came to mind as we listened to the delivery.

If anything, the years have improved Lowe's voice, by giving it an even warmer, more even timbre - sweet without being saccharine.  His set started off with a fair dose of his newer material, which definitely held its own.  However, Lowe managed to truly win over the crowd when he delivered his own "Cruel To Be Kind" and "What's So Funny (About Peace, Love, and Understanding)?", as well as a cover of Elvis Costello's "Alison", at the end of the set.

Wilco took to the stage soon thereafter, and launched in to a 2+ hour set that covered the breadth of their entire catalog.  Before we go any further, we'll start by saying this:  Wilco is one of those bands who, no matter what, in any circumstance, always seem to win us over live.  Even if we're dragging a bit on the way to the show, the opposite is always true on the other side.  Inevitably, we spend the next few weeks revisiting their entire catalog and getting back into the band.

This is why it was such a surprise, that last night, this simply didn't happen.  Did the band put on a bad performance?  Not particularly, but it wasn't great either.  There was something in the band's approach and attitude that simply felt staid; like they were just going through the motions.  It didn't help things that the crowd was a bizarre mix of insanely devoted fans, and arbitrary New Yorkers who didn't even seem aware that they were at a concert.  There were no quiet moments, but there were no truly raucous moments either.  Everything chugged along a steady, neutral pace.

The new material from the band's latest, The Whole Love, was certainly tolerable, but it didn't have any real grip on the crowd.  Moreover, the arrangements of the band's old material were the same ones that we've been hearing for the past few years, with little deviation or inspiration.  The lone standout was a somewhat updated version of "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", that added some fuzzy tones and textures, no doubt culled from the recent album sessions.

It's difficult to issue such a negative assessment of a Wilco show, because the fact remains that they are a fantastic band, and they do truly deliver, even when they're a little bit off.  Nonetheless, after watching their shows for the past ten years, we also feel pretty confident saying that they've reached something of a creative impasse, and perhaps need to find a way to get "unstuck".  It brings to mind the scene from the film I Am Trying To Break Your Heart where Jeff Tweedy opts not to play it safe as the band constructs their live setlist.  Mr. Tweedy, it may be time to take some of your own advice.

Wilco Is Ready To Rock Your World This Fall

Wilco at the Greek Theater, from the HAD Archive

Hot on the heels of the first seven inch from their very own record label (see video below), Wilco have announced that (surprise of the year) the label was not created solely for that lone vinyl release. No, in fact, the band has been hard at work on a brand new record entitled The Whole Love, and will be using their label dBpm Records to deliver it to the world on September 27th.

We'll get to the record in a minute, but first: "I Might". The track is almost a toned-down take on the rock-out Wilco that created "I Am A Wheel". The lyrics are curt and clipped, and the guitars are largely fuzzed out, delivering a basic incendiary rock riff. The rest of the track is fleshed out by percussion that is unquestionably the work of Glenn Kotche, and a collective motion that we associate almost solely with Wilco. While the chilled-out influence of Sky Blue Sky is certainly present, we have to say that it's the most vigor we've heard from the quintet in quite a while.

The record itself (cover above) is comprised of 12 new tracks, and includes "I Might" in addition to 11 others. The band has previewed very little of the material as of yet, aside from a teaser trailer (below) that features snippets of what we assume to be (given the title) the lead track from the record. One has to assume this isn't for wanting to conserve new material, as the band is also issuing a deluxe edition of the disc that will feature three additional new songs, as well as an alternate version of "Black Alone".

True to form, in addition to releasing a serious amount of music, the band intends to back it up by taking their show on the road. If you're paying attention at all to live music, then you know Wilco one of the best bets going, and we can assure you that we've never walked away from a Wilco show doing anything less than grinning ear to ear. Yes, they're that good. This tour will consist mainly of east coast/midwest dates, and will be followed by a European run. We can only assume that the band has a west coast run planned for their return - time will tell.

The Whole Love drops September 27th.

Wilco Kick Off dBpm Records With Limited 7" and Solid Sound Fest v. 2.0

It's been a while since we've checked in with Wilco, but suffice it to say: the band's been busy. After completing their contract with Nonesuch, the band has broken out on their own, and decided to start their own record label, dBpm Records. Unlike last time, when the band departed their label amongst big-music tomfoolery, this time things seem to have gone much more smoothly.

As such, the band seems to be in good spirits, and is kicking off the summer with a limited edition 7" as the first release from their label. Containing two tracks, a new Wilco song "I Might" and a cover of Nick Drake's "I Love My Label", the record will be available in two formats on July 19th: clear blue vinyl (online preorder), and classic black (retail, above).

If that's not enough for the collector in you, then head to Wilco's Solid Sound fest in North Adams, MA on the weekend of June 24th. In addition to hosting a slew of awesome music (Wilco, Thurston Moore, and Levon Helm band, to name a few), the festival will have a third, clear vinyl, version of the single available for consumption. Win!

Wilco Adds December Jeff Tweedy Show To 'Roadcase'

Jeff Tweedy @ Outside Lands 2008, from the HAD Archive

Wilco devotees that we are, we're always keeping an eye on the Wilco "Roadcase". The feature allows fans of the band to stream various live rarities, usually in the form of soundboard feeds from live shows. Awesome, right?

Well, in this case, particularly awesome: If you're one of the many folk who wanted to catch Jeff Tweedy on his December concert tour and weren't able to get tickets, this is your lucky day. The Roadcase is currently streaming Tweedy's show from the Lincoln Theater in DC (including a killer opening with "Spiders"), and it's a doozy. What's more, they have a full band show from Berlin up as well - you really can't lose!

Jeff Tweedy Plots Mini Solo Tour, Bowery Ballroom 12/4

Jeff Tweedy with Wilco at Lupo's, from the HAD Archive

You know we love us some Wilco, so it makes sense that we were totally stoked to learn that Jeff Tweedy will be hitting the road in December. As has become somewhat customary, Tweedy is taking a little time up from recording with the band and getting in a little alone time on the road.

The tour consists of a mere three dates, and if you're New York City, Tarrytown, NY or Charlottesville, VA, then you're in luck! As you might guess, we'll be hitting up the New York show, which takes place at Bowery Ballroom on December 4th. A presale for the event goes on next Wednesday - check out all the details here.

It's A Good Weekend For Festivals

It's the end of the summer, and we know you've already been to a lot of shows, but don't give up! There's still so many great bands to see, and this weekend marks notable options on both sides of the continent!

Here on the east coast, Wilco will be holding their first ever Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA. The fest promises to be a Wilco-centric celebration of music, with sets from the band as well as their numerous side projects. On top of that, they've created interactive elements to allow you to futz with the band members gear to your heart's content. Fun!

Outside Lands 2009, from the HAD Archive. Photo by Rick Audet

Meanwhile, on the west coast Outside Lands gets under way in Golden Gate park. We don't need to tell you that this bad boy is the bay area's biggest music festival. However, we will remind you that it means you get to the The Strokes reunite, and that, dear children, should be more than enough incentive. (Yes, there are a million other amazing bands there as well. Stop being silly).

Regardless, this should be more than enough to keep you entertained, so get your butt out the door!

Wilco's Kicking Television At IFC in HD Tomorrow

While many of you, we're sure, own and enjoy Wilco's DVD Ashes Of American Flags (trailer below), tomorrow night at IFC offers something of a unique experience even for those who have it at home. In short, the film will be showing on the big screen (yes!) in high definition (double yes!). On top of that, there's all sorts of goodness going on at the showing, like a ticket giveaway to the Solid Sound Festival and, more importantly, the ability to nerd out with other New York Wilco fans. Yes, that means us too. See you there!

Wilco Played Lupo's In Providence - Pictures, Review, And Setlist

Last night at Lupo's in Providence, Wilco took to the stage as part of their current small theater tour, and delivered an epic 35 song set that not only traversed the band's career, but also offered up one of the best sets we've ever had the pleasure of seeing the band play. They have collectively gotten such a handle of their back catalog that they can delve into any point in the 15 year history, and expertly bring any song forward. Combine that with a 3+ hour electric/acoustic/electric set configuration, and you have the ingredients for a near-perfect Wilco show.

The first set could best be characterized as the more experimental and electronic set of the show, and it was loaded to the top with raucous noise and sonics. Drawing upon much of their catalog, it really emphasized the band's forays into noise cacophony and multi-guitar interplay. The chaos was somewhat balanced, however, by some more straight-ahead moments, including "Wilco (The Song)", "One Wing", "Sonny Feeling", and "California Stars". As the tail end of "Poor Places" exploded across the crowd, the band moved about to allow for the arrival of a new stage setup and instrumentation.

These items were setup for the middle set, which was ostensibly acoustic. It found Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy both on acoustic guitars, Glenn Kotche on a reduced drum kit, and John Stirratt playing (for part of the set) an acoustic bass. In the middle set were perhaps the biggest setlist surprises for us, specifically a stripped down version (closer to its original live incarnation) of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", and the return of "Not For The Season", a staple back on the band's tour for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The set closed with a killer version of "Airline To Heaven" that built and built as the stage returned to its original setup for the third set.

The third set was perhaps the most straight ahead of the three, and featured the band playing a rock-centric set that would have been just as comfortable in their late 90's tour configuration as it does now. It reached into the band's back catalog for gems such as "I Got You" and "Too Far Apart", but also put some of their more recent material in context with the older stuff. "Theologians" and "Walken" both felt right at home amongst their older brethren. The set closed with a cover of Big Star's "Thank You Friends".

When the band returned to an unrelenting crowd for the encore, the show was well into its second hour. Apparently of limitless energy, the band summarily delivered the 1-2-3 punch of "Dreamer In My Dreams", "Casino Queen", and "Outtsite (Outtamind)". It was a killer way to end the evening, and when it did all wrap up, even after 3+ hours of music, the crowd was still cheering for more.

In hind sight, the show was so many things at once that it was difficult to absorb them all at the time. There was the light hearted awesomeness of both the crowd and the band. There was the incredible technical skill and tightness that seems to get better every time we see Wilco. There was the unbelievable setlist of more than three hours, with hardly any breaks. More than anything, there was just the fact that Wilco, no matter what, every time we see them, reminds exactly why it is that we're so in love with live rock and roll.

If you haven't gotten the gist by now, we'll spell it out for you: now is the time to see Wilco. It doesn't matter if you've seen them before, or if one particular album is your favorite, or if you're just too tired or broke. Just do it. Get out there, go to one of these small theater shows, and be prepared to have your mind blown. And, if you really, really, can't make it, then you're still in luck: the band is webcasting Tuesday and Wednesday nights' shows. Yum.

Beck's Record Club Is Cooler Than Yours

The last time we checked in with Beck's Record Club, he was hard at work re-recording the Velvet Underground's debut, to amazing results. Since then, he's continued the hard work, and this time he's managed to enlist most of Wilco to help him with the results.

Continuing the late 60's trend, the latest iteration of "record club" has spent their time collaborating on covers of the Skip Spence recor OAR. The results, dare we say, are nothing short of fabulous. The group offers up synthed-out loopy takes on the original record, which is far more earthy in its original form.

We've embedded one of our faves from the sessions above: "Dixie Peach Promenade" finds Beck delivering bubbly synth lines, while Jeff Tweedy on vocals, and Glenn Kotche collaborating with Tweedy's son on percussion. The rest of the session (including an appearance by Feist) can be had over at Beck's Record Club. (And, once you get done with OAR, you can move on to The Songs Of Leonard Cohen, which Beck also managed to cover in the interim. So...much...music!)

Wilco Mount Winter/Spring Small Theater Tour

Wilco at the Greek Theater, Berkeley in 2009, from the HAD Archive

It's been quite a while since we've managed to catch the boys from Wilco in a cozy theater setting, so we were pretty psyched to discover that they've lined up an extensive tour consisting extensively of small-venue dates. Starting on the west coast, making it's way through Canada, and then covering most of the east coast, the band's kicking off 2010 with a boatload of small shows.

For those in the New York area, that means two stops in Montclair, New Jersey, and one up in Providence. Pick your poison, but we have to say that our inclination always leans towards Lupo's - that place is about as good as it gets. You can bet we'll be there, plus it has the added benefit (unlike Montclair) of not already being sold out.

Meanwhile, if you can't wait four months for a solid dose of Wilco goodness, we recommend you either watch Ashes Of American flags (again), or head over to the band's website and check out this killer zoomable photo of the band's legendary loft. The tool lets you zoom in to a resolution where you can check out stuff like settings on guitar components, spines on magazines, and all the other creepy stalker-level shit you can think of.

Meantime, we'll plan on seeing you out there in April. Have fun!

Wilco Played Lowell, MA And It Rained. A Lot. - Review, Setlist

Rain drenched picture courtesy of Andrew Choy

This past Saturday, Wilco played LaLacheur Ballpark as part of their set of "Ballpark Shows" on the East Coast. But this one had an additional twist: it rained, as in POURED. One of the HAD staff was on hand for the show, and had this to say:

"Wilco was amazing. NONE of the "antics" from the New Orleans show, just straight up musical goodness. A solid mix of new and old - they opened with "Wilco (The Song)". After about an hour and a half, it started just to sprinkle rain and then the heavens opened on us DOWNPOUR. Jeff sang "Hummingbird" while roadies were running around covering instruments, and then they waved goodbye and left the stage. The crowd stayed and were chanting "one more song" , soJeff and Nels came back on and plugged in (no one was electrocuted) and started "I'm the Man who loves you". Soon, Glenn went under a tarp to get to his drum kit to join them (and shortly got the roadies to pull the tarp off), Mike was next, and finally Pat and John. They sang a long version while it poured on all of us (and them); too cool. Everyone was singing along, of course, and then they left for good. Perhaps we missed a somewhat longer show, but I think they were really were happy that the crowd was so enthusiastic...crazy karma, too fun!"

So there you have it, kids: even in the rain, Wilco loves you baby.

Feist Joins Wilco On Letterman For "You And I" - Video

Now, this is more like it. After Wilco's relatively uninspired performance on Conan a couple of weeks back, we were happy to see them nail "You And I" as they paid David Letterman a visit.

Of course, it didn't exactly hurt things that Feist was on hand to help them out and add a fair dose of energy to the mix. As she sang with Tweedy, it was clear that he was more than a little happy to have her on hand, as was the rest of the band.

In fact, we can't say we've seen the Wilco crew be quite so grin-filled in quite a while. Then again, can you really blame them?

Wilco and Okkervil River Played The Greek Theater - Pictures, Review, Setlist

If there was any suitable way to follow up David Byrne's performance on Friday night at the Greek, then this was certainly it. Okkervil River and Wilco joined forces to descend upon the very same venue, and give Byrne an unquestionable run for his money on the superb show from the night before. The two bands both delivered sets that ran the gamut of their catalog, and underscored just how formidable both of those catalogs are. However, even more than that, both bands gave joyous performances that, when combined with the weather, closed out one of the most exciting weekends of music we've seen in a very long time.

Okkervil River took the stage promptly at 7:30, and the Greek was already packed. It was clear that most of the audience had come to see both bands, and they showed it in spades. Will Sheff, for his part, did exactly the same, and managed to squeeze all of his usual passion and antics into a quick 30 minute set.

This was the first time we had seen the band with their new lead guitarist Lauren Gurgiolo, and we have to say we thought that she nailed it. Her style is certainly a little different from the band's older material, but the fact that she was totally shredding on some solos, adding fantastic accents to other songs, and thoroughly multi-instrumental all added up to be super impressive.

While the crowd was enthusiastic across the board, they really dug in for the last two numbers, "Our Life Is Not A Movie (Or Maybe)" and "It's Kicks". Both of the upbeat tunes underscored just how well Okkervil River played as an opening band, and how masterfully they worked such a large venue. We've said it before, but we'll say it again: they're a band who are going to keep getting bigger and bigger - keep your eyes open.

Wilco took the stage right around 8:30, and it was clear from the outset that they were ready to have a good time: everyone was all smiles, and the crowd was eating it up. They led off the set with a old and new mix: "Wilco (The Song)", "Muzzle Of Bees", and "Shot In The Arm". The latter served to really get the crowd going, and proceeded to give way to what would end up being two and a half hours of awesome rock and roll.

At this point, it almost seems moot to mention the technical instrumental wizardry that Wilco brings to the stage, if only because it's such a constant. that being said, they are such a tight unit, that it's still worth bringing up. The onstage rapport, the expert arrangements, and the band's individual talents all serve to create a live awesomeness that really can't be captured outside of being there.

The set list was a healthy mix of new and old material, with a slightly heavier emphasis on the former. The band's forthcoming (as in, this week) new album was well represented, with five tracks accounted for. All of the new material went over extremely well, although for us the highlight was "Bull Black Nova". The song manages to be a bit more edgy than its cohorts on the new record, and in a live setting it was even more so. Definitely tasty.

Of the old material, there were some favorites ("Misunderstood", "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "California Stars", and "Jesus Etc" to name a few), and a few surprises. Specifically, we were shocked to hear "Box Full Of Letters" (from AM), and "I Can't Stand It" (the lead off track from Summerteeth). Both of these tracks were somewhat noted in Wilco lore for being radio-friendly, and not particularly loved by the band. That being said, the performances were totally amazing - we're guessing the band's decision to play all of their recorded material in Chicago last year may have been the inspiration. Either way, we were loving it.

At the end of the day, we'll sum it up by saying this: Wilco shows are magical, as are shows at the Greek. Combine the two on a beautiful 70 degree night, and you have about the best dose of entertainment you can get. To get to hear the band tear through such an awesome selection of material, and be smiling while doing it was simply amazing. Nels Cline, as always, delivered knock-you-out guitar solos, and the rest of the band served to provide the pieces for the always-expanding Wilco puzzle. As the night came to a close, and the band tore out some insane solos on "Hoodoo Voodoo", we were left smiling, and knowing we'd be that way for quite a while.

Wilco Underwhelmed Us On The Tonight Show

Look, we do like the new Wilco record, and lord knows we're huge fans of Tweedy and Co., but last night's performance on Conan just felt....empty. Sure, the band was playing in their fancy-shmancy suits, but they just seemed spaced out and sort of bland. Suffice it to say that it feel short of what we know the band is capable of, and it didn't exactly help that the refrain of "You Never Know" includes the lyric "I don't care any more".

We're sure things will be much better in Berkeley on Saturday. Stupid TV.

Wilco On The Tonight Show Tonight, Webcasting Berkeley On Saturday

Wilco at Jazzfest, from the HAD Archive

As Wilco tours the US and preps for next week's release of their self-titled record, the band is managing to deliver a few mass media performances for those who can't manage to catch them live. This week the band is on the West coast, and is delivering a one two punch.

The first is this evening on NBC's Tonight Show, where the band will join new host Conan O'Brien and presumably deliver a tune from their sparkly record.

The second will be on Saturday night, when the band will stream the entirety of their show at Berkeley's Greek Theater over the glorious interwebs. You can catch it at Wilco's "Roadcase" - frankly, we recommend cancelling your Saturday night plans. It's gonna be delish.

Jeff Tweedy: "Millionaire"

Jeff Tweedy in Bend, OR, from the HAD Archive

This tidbit was played only six times at a handful of dates in 2002 and 2003 (including Loose Fur's two night stand at St. Ann's Warehouse), and makes us smile every time we hear it. It's a classic example of Tweedy's acerbic wit, drenched simultaneously in melancholy, skepticism, and condecension. It also manages to layer a sparse melody on top of an almost classic country chord progression, while the lyrical content is unquestionably modern.

Given Tweedy's recent turn towards more affable songwriting, we wouldn't recommend getting up your hopes of seeing "Millionaire" on record any time soon. That being said, it's always nice to have gems like this in the archive - it's one of the things that makes live music so fantastic!

Wilco Delivers Free iPhone App

We have to admit that when we heard Wilco was delivering an iPhone app, we kinda wondered what good it would be. But the fact of the matter is, that it's pretty cool. The *free* app for Apple's ubiquitous entry to the phone market is structured much like the band's website, and gives a similar navigational feel.

At the end of the day, that's basically what the app is: it takes the content from the band's website, and makes it easily accessible on the iPhone. While it's not exactly a miracle of modern technology, it is quite neat (and convenient) to have the band's tour dates, discography, and news in the palm of your hand. What's more, we do so much fiddling on our iPhone when we're bored, that it's a nice way to catch up on the band during our downtime.

So, yeah, it's pretty tough to argue with free, and when it's free and cool, well that's a no brainer. We gotta say - other bands should really get on this bandwagon.

Wave of the future. Wave of the future. Wave of the future.

Okkervil River To Join Wilco On Tour

Picture from the HAD Archive

As though you needed more incentive to go see Wilco in June at the Greek: Between the band's stellar live show, and the awesomeness of the new record, it's going to be amazing. Well, now it's going to be even more amazing. We've just gotten a heads up that Okkervil River will be joining Wilco for their late June/early July dates, and that includes the Greek. Killer.

We haven't seen Okkervil River live since 2007, but that was certainly enough to win us over to their sound. Not only is the band a rock solid instrumental unit, but lead singer Will Scheff's persona takes heart-on-the-sleeve to a new level. Given their own level of enthusiasm, it'll be interesting to see what the do with the "opener" slot. Frankly, we'd be lying if we said we weren't hoping for a guest appearance on some Wilco tunes...here's hoping.

Wilco (The Album) Streaming On Wilco's Web Site

On Monday we mentioned that we were hankering to hear Wilco's latest, and apparently our prayers were quickly answered. The band has released a statement that the record has apparently leaked, and so in keeping with Wilco tradition, they've begun streaming the album via their web site.

The site itelf has been completely revamped as well, and there's a lot to check out. We're still in the midst of our first listen to the record, so those thoughts will be forthcoming. Meanwhile, what are you waiting for? Get over there and listen!

Wilco: Free Download And A Taste Of The New Record

While we were a bit bummed not to hear any new material from Wilco's new record when we were caught them at Jazz Fest the other week, that certainly hasn't done anything to deter us from being psyched for their forthcoming record. Over the past year or so, the band has given tastes of the new material here and there, and to our ears it sounds like perhaps Mr. Tweedy is indulging his darker side a bit more than he has of late.

While Sky Blue Sky was an admitted foray into earnest singer-songwriter mode, the new material appears to hinge more on Tweedy's uncanny ability to pull influences from all over the rock spectrum and mix them into a unique bit of goodness. What's more, the lyrical content appears to have returned to Tweedy's more poetic influences, and depend less on a direct storyteller vibe.

As the album release grows near, more and more information is amassing, and this week the cover art dropped (above) as well as the following track list:

Wilco (the song)

Deeper Down
One Wing
Bull Black Nova
You And I
You Never Know
Country Disappeared
Solitaire
I'll Fight
Sonny Feeling
Everlasting Everything

While all the material has yet to surface, a few of the tracks are out there. We've linked to them so that you can get a taste for yourself. We have to say, we're thinking this record is gonna be a doozy.

On top of all the new album release goodness, the band has also released a sign-o-the-times download via their website. A cover of the Woody Guthrie tune "The Jolly Banker", the song is a well placed dig at our nation's current financial woes. While you can snag the track for free, the band is hoping that you'll at least make a small donation to the Woody Guthrie Foundation. Head to the band's site to grab the tune.
