Okkervil River Debuts New Material, Terminal 5 In June

Okkervil River @ The Independent, from the HAD Archive

It's been quite a while since we've heard new material from Okkervil River, so we were pretty stoked to discover the band making a very early appearance for their new record I Am Very Far, which drops in May. The band stopped in at Jimmy Fallon and, joined by AC Newman, delivered a solid take on the tromping rocker "Wake And Be Fine".

The track, which is the first single from the record and due on 12-inch next week, is the beginning of what will (presumably) be a big year for the band touring in support of the new record. That support will include a June date at the vacuous T5, which these days seems to be the hotspot of choice for indie bands verging on the bigtime. Stay tuned as the band expands their plans for world domination, and in the meantime enjoy the vid of the new song, above.

The Walkmen Played Terminal 5 - Pictures, Review, Setlist

When The Walkmen have an on night they make magic, and last night at Terminal 5 was most certainly an on night. Maybe it was the fact that they were returning home after a month in Europe, maybe it was the strength of their new record Lisbon, or maybe it was the grandiose size of Terminal 5. Regardless, it was one of the best shows we've seen from The Walkmen, and if anything, we wish it could have been longer.

To start with, the band was in top form: Hamilton Leithauser's voice was amazing, and he killed every song that he sang on. The energy and performance were off the charts. Unquestionably, vocals are key to the band's character, and last night was one of the best performances we've ever heard from the band's frontman.

Still, with The Walkmen vocals are just one (albeit strong) part of the puzzle. The rest of the band was just as raring to go, and every tune was overflowing with exuberance and enthusiasm. The amazing thing about this band is that they manage to take that exuberance and wrap it up in a musical subtlety that allows each song to carefully define its character's charms. Without question, they are one of the most instrumentally dynamic units on the road today.

The performance was additionally supported by an incredibly solid light show, and a brass section that had been (apparently) absent while the band was in Europe. Combined with the band's simply classic suits, the result was a stage show that felt dropped in from another era, with the charm of a rat pack era showcase.

At the end of the day, The Walkmen's show last night left nothing to be desired: in top form, the 5-piece deliver one of the best live shows around. Hearing the songs from their latest record in a live environment was an unparalleled treat, cemented by the fact that the band was clearly thrilled to be returning to a hometown crowd. On top of that, they closed the show with two of their most classic "hits", "The Rat", and "We've Been Had". It was a great way to start the the December concert season, and if we could do it again tonight, we would.

Video: Ok Go - "This Too Shall Pass", Live At T5

We've espoused the awesomeness of Ok Go's live show on many an occasion, but for any of you doubters out there, we think we may have dug up a little video that may edge you closer to the converts. We took the video above at the band's recent Terminal 5 performance, as they closed the show with "This Too Shall Pass". Not only is it a fantastic rock video, period, but we think it captures the awesomeness, humor, and excitement of Ok Go's live show to T. Check it out and see what you think.

Ok Go Played Terminal 5 - Pictures, Review

Ok Go is unquestionably on an upward trajectory. Over the past year, the band released their latest record Of The Blur Colour Of The Sky, and despite the departure from their record label, managed to make a huge success of it. Bolstered by some notoriously fantastic videos, the band has been steadily building a following, and with good reason. The videos are one piece of a band that is a self-proclaimed multimedia experience, and thankfully, their stage show more than lives up to those claims. Saturday night the band played Terminal 5, and more than demonstrated their comfort with the big time.

In a way, playing a big room is a given for Ok Go: Their show has always been bigger than life, and often was a bit shocking when seen seen in a small room. Many of the elements that are epic in small rooms simply became more so in a larger setting. Confetti streams, LED jackets and laser guitars; all of these elements played out well in Terminal 5's vacuous space.

The more showy elements, however, were not the only thing that translated well to the larger room. The quiet moments did better in this large setting as well. When lead singer Damian Kulash dragged his guitar and stool to the center of the room for an acoustic turn, his willingness to be out amidst the fans was even more notable. Put differently: it's a hell of a task to drag a stool and guitar out into the middle of a room of 500 people, but if it's 1800 people, it's even more so.

All the above being true, the bottom line is that Ok Go can simply deliver musically. Small room or big room, this is a band that has an extremely solid hold on their setlist, and isn't resting on the laurels of backing tracks, or some sort of reimagining of their studio material. That, and a set of killer rock and roll jams that are perfect for the big stage.

Interestingly, the material from Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky was just as (if not better) received than the band's older material. Earlier in the year, we'd say that the band's fans still seemed somewhat fixated on the back catalogue, but that's clearly changed. Whether it be from video publicity or just greater traction by the record, tunes like "This Too Shall Pass", "White Knuckles", and "End Love" were met with serious audience enthusiasm.

We left Terminal 5 feeling one way: that Ok Go are exactly where they should be. Terminal 5 often feels to big for a band, or leaves one feeling like it's an oddball space that simply wasn't really designed for rock and roll. Quite to the contrary: apparently you just need to know how to fill it. Ok Go did exactly that on Friday night, and left us with little doubt that the next room they play might be even bigger.

EELS Played Terminal 5 - Pictures, Video, Review, Setlist

EELS always deliver a solid show, but what's in store can unquestionably vary. From a curmudgeon-y E (cane included) touring with a string section, to an all out rock band, the EELS almost defy definition in a live setting. On Saturday night at Terminal 5, we stopped in to check up on E, and unquestionably got a dose of the latter.

E arrived on stage subtly enough, delivering a number of tunes solo, and then with "The Chet" backing him up on pedal steel. Dressed in a white jump suit, a bandana, and a serious beard (think Souljacker-era), and armed with his Danelectro guitar, the first three songs (including "Daisies Of The Galaxy") were quiet, sweet, and understated.

From their, all bets were off, as a full band joined E and The Chet on stage, and they busted into a lengthy and rocking set. They were definitely tightly rehearsed, possibly even to the point of making their onstage antics seem a bit contrived or stilted. Nonetheless, any over-preparation couldn't really stifle the awesomeness of a huge setlist that included killer covers of "Summer In The City", "Summertime", and "Twist And Shout" (which, oddly, had "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues" sung on top of it).

The set had moments where it would calm down a bit (a quick stopover for "In My Dreams" and "The Look You Give That Guy"), but for the most part, E was dead set on airing out his rock songs, and we loved him for it. It's been a long time since we've heard the likes of "Souljacker Pt. 1" and "Jungle Telegraph", and they were nicely accented by the band's newer rockers like "Fresh Blood", "Tremendous Dynamite", and "My Baby Loves Me".

At the end of the day, it comes down to the simple fact that we love E, but that doesn't change the fact that one of the things we love about him is his dynamism. It's been way, way, too long since we've seen him put on a rock show this stupendous, and let us tell you: it was well worth the wait.

Frightened Rabbit and Plants And Animals Coming To Terminal 5 In October

Plants and Animals at Bowery Ballroom, from the HAD Archive

As recently as last week, we mentioned that Plants and Animals were destined to play bigger and bigger rooms, and it seems we were right on target. In what is looking to be a live rendition of our Top Records of 2008, the band will be joining Frightened Rabbit at Terminal 5 on October 30th.

While we can't say we're exactly stoked that these bands will be in what is probably New York's most sonically vacuous concert hall, we can say that we think it will be a massively exciting bill to catch live. Both bands are incredibly passionate in the live environ, and to have them on the same stage, well, it should be one to write home about.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon.

Pretty Lights, RJD2, and Chiddy Bang Played Terminal Five - Pictures, Review

Across a sea of scantily clad teenage girls in neon spandex, desperate screams for beer and ecstasy float through the crowd. This was the first sold out Bowery Presents venue with virtually no line at the bar. Immediately after ordering the first drink a kid wearing jean shorts and an American flag headband approaches asking if we would buy him a beer. After saying "no" to the beer offer, and also informing him we didn't know where to score any ecstasy, he goes back to chewing on a glow stick. The first of the nights three acts takes the stage.

Comprised of Chidera "Chiddy" Anamege, on vocals; and Noah Bernstien (aka. Dan Summers), this Philadelphia based Hip hop duo Chiddy Bang has been described "a hipsters wet dream". Anamege showed aesthetically pleasing vocals with impressive control live. What was disappointing were the two played almost entirely to a back track on Berntiens Macbook.

As the two cruised through their very liberally sampled catalog featuring the likes of Radiohead, Passion Pit, and MGMT, to name a few. Their mass popularity among the hipster youth becomes abundantly clear and very easy to understand. The crowed erupts to the familiarity of MGMT's "Kids", as the two arrive at their break out hit "Opposite of Adults". Two girls in matching face makeup, and borrowed Jane Fonda aerobic fashions start making out with a gangly boy significantly shorter, and significantly less physically developed (though I assume roughly around the same grade, possibly juniors).

Waiting for RJD2 to take the stage, conversations begin among the small minority of the +21's. "Could it be that we have the same musical maturity as this spandex teen orgy?" The realization that the event was a fund raiser promoted by Brobible.com , began to solve the age mystery; the crowd was not a representation of the music, it was a representation of Brobible's demographic. RJD2 (Ramble John "RJ" Krohn) walks out behind a mass assortment of turntables.

To our ears, his live audio and visuals were not what he deserves as an artist. Treated as almost a half-time show, it was as if the light and sound techs turned him down and walked away. Bouncing around 5 turntables, RJD2 was the only artist playing primarily on vinyl (For this, at the least, the man should earn a few lasers).

Doing what DJ's are meant to do, layering a wide range of various samples, he proved himself as a craftsman. Covering a solid collection his work, RJD2 kept a good energy going (even with the light and sound handicap) playing crowd favorites from his original "Deadringer" album, and a personal favorite, "Ghostwriter".

During the break for Pretty Lights, we began to wonder if the promoters skimped on the lighting for the show, this would prove rather disappointing considering the headliner, "Pretty Lights". Eventually a loud base speaker began to rumble, then thousands of blinding LED lights begin to fuse with hundreds of multi-colored lasers.

Pretty Lights is mainly one producer, Derek Vincent Smith, who when playing live is accompanied by drummer, Cory Eberhard. The two do their job, create a sensory mind fuck leaving the crowd with only one option, to dance.

Hot Chip and The xx Played Terminal 5 - Pictures, Review

Sometimes it feels like only a ridiculously awesome double bill will get us motivated to head to Terminal 5 – maybe our least favorite venue in New York – but if the British one-two punch of Hot Chip and The xx don't fit that description then we're not sure what does! It makes sense these bands are pals. Members of both hail from The Elliot School in the UK and now they’re crisscrossing paths on tour in the States (Both recently rocked Coachella.)

First the xx took the stage. Probably no other band has been hyped more in 2009/2010 and in this case it's well-deserved. They were mesmerizing. People have constantly thrown out words like "mellow," and "minimalist," to describe the black-and-white clad trio, but we were impressed with how the xx took their addictive debut album up a notch for their live show.

They've been hitting the festival circuit hard and the practice has paid off. Even at their quietest moments they had our full attention. It’s clear this band isn't going to burn out on the flames of their own hype. They're going to be around awhile and we can't wait to see what they do next!

Next came the headliners: the greatest Brit nerd dance rock band on the planet. Their new album "One Life Stand" is by far their most chilled-out so far, but fans expecting to jump, sweat (and even crowd surf!) weren’t disappointed. Some of the new songs sounded even better live, like "We Have Love" and "Take It In," and familiar classics like "And I Was a Boy From School" and "Over and Over" rocked.

Still, maybe we were spoiled by witnessing Hot Chip absolutely tear down the house at the much smaller Highline Ballroom at the MySpace secret show there in February. Blame jetlag or the poor sound at Terminal 5, but two of our favorite songs “No Fit State” and “I Feel Better” sounded a bit murky during the encore.

Even on an off night, Hot Chip are better than 90% of the bands out there - and the young and drunk crowd didn’t seem to notice.
