David Bowie Drops New Single, Album In March

If you're a long-time reader of HAD, you'll no doubt recall that one of our undying obsessions is that of the Thin White Duke, David Bowie himself. Given that he's been a bit of a recluse in recent years, there hasn't been much news to speak of, and we've had to satisfy ourselves with perusing the archives, and enjoying memories of live shows gone by.

Well, starting now, that's all going to change: on this, his 66th birthday, Bowie has released a new track entitled "Where Are We Now?" (video above), and announced a full-length record The Next Day, due to drop March 12th. To state it lightly, for any fans of Bowie this is huge, huge news!

So what does it all mean? Thus far details are sketchy, but the track (which is currently available on iTunes) and record are apparently produced by long-time cohort Tony Visconti, which is a good way to get things started. Bucking the trends of Bowie's last few records, the lead single is decisively a ballad, and it's a good one at that.

With a strikingly simple studio arrangement, "Where Are We Now?" is loaded with nostalgic lyrics about Bowie's time in Berlin, and recalls the instrumentation of his mid-seventies work, notably "Wild Is The Wind", off of Station To Station. The songs conclusion breaks from the ballad structure, with a march-influenced drum beat, and a sense of general rebirth. A good thing, indeed.

Suffice it to say, we are ridiculously excited about this development, and will keep you posted. In the meantime, check the video above and enjoy it!!!

Crocodiles Unveil Album Promo and New Track - April Dates in NYC

Crocodiles in 2009, from the HAD Archive

Crocodiles have dropped the promo for their new record Endless Flowers, and they've done it in style. The under-two-minute video clip (below) takes on the form of satire as a badly composed infomercial. More importantly, it features clips of various tracks on the disc, and utterly reassures us that the band (while slightly cleaned up for their infomercial appearance) is staying true to form. Loaded with bombastic drums, fuzzy guitars, and oozing synths, the disc promises to be another solid dose of what makes this duo a repeat-play around these parts.

The lead track from the disc, entitled "Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)" is a fair example of the band's craft: it manages to feel dancey and rocking, while at the same time barraging you with a wall of sound that soothes and immerses at the same time. Obviously, the band is to some degree indebted to some of their English forefathers who pioneered much of this sound. Increasingly, however, Crocodiles are developing their own sonic fingerprint that is both distinctive and engaging.

In live news, the band just wrapped a spring tour that sidestepped New York. However, it appears that they were kind enough to tag us with a few bonus shows at the end, as the band is playing a double header on April 11th and 12th. One show will be at Glasslands and the other at Mercury Lounge. If you have a deep love of dancing to riotous noise, we highly recommend you show your face - you won't be sorry.

Jack White To Drop Solo Record In April

Well, it's finally happened: Jack White has given up on the facade of a band, and embraced his inner musical genius to release a solo record.  Titled Blunderbuss, the album will be released on April 24th.  The first single is entitled "Love Interrupted", and if it's any indication, this record is going to be exactly what we've been wanting from White for years.

Tempered with woodwinds, and a Fender Rhodes, the track is a simple ballad  in classic White style, with a gentleness that recalls the best moments of the White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan.  It's been clear that White has had this up his sleeve for years, and we're glad he took the plunge.  Stream the track below.

White Rabbits Drop New Record, Milk Famous, In March

It's been a while since White Rabbits dropped their second full length It's Frightening, so when news came over the wire this morning that they had a new one on the way, we were psyched for the news.  The new record, which drops March 6th on TBD Records, is titled Milk Famous.

While it's not produced by Britt Daniel, the band still kept their Spoon association close, and roped in long time band producer Mike McCarthy to produce the record in Austin, Texas. If the lead track ("Heavy Metal", below) is any indication, McCarthy managed to help the band stay true to the sound of It's Frightening, and deliver a record that is a windy maze of synth laden guitar lines and driving, compact beats.

In addition to the new record, the band will be heading out on tour this spring.  This is, as anyone who has seen the band on stage knows, fantastic news.  Their live show surpasses the greatness of the records to be its own beast, and is an absolutely revelatory experience.  The tour includes stops at awesomely intimate venues across the US, including the Independent in San Francisco, The Paradise in Boston, and (alright, not so intimate) Webster Hall in New York. Suffice it to say, White Rabbits deserve a great deal of your attention this spring.

Damon Albarn Returns To Africa For Mali Music Follow-Up

We've long been seriously in love with Damon Albarn's Mali Music, so when a friend at New Year's asked if we had heard about the Blur and Gorillaz frontman's African project, we knowingly smiled and knowingly informed them that they were about eight year's late to a seriously awesome musical experience. Well, allow us to stand corrected. It turns out, in fact, that we were about two months late. Albarn returned to Africa and released a new record in October, this time from the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital city of Kinshasa.  The result is a record entitled Kinshasa One Two, and it's a doozy.

With a process similar to Mali Music, Albarn headed to the DRC to allow Western producers to collaborate with native DRC musicians.  While we haven't gotten our hands on full record quite yet, but from everything we've heard it appears to be just as, if not more, enticing than it's predecessor. Albarn apparently brought along Dan The Automator for the adventure, along with XL Records head Richard Russell, and the trio recorded the collaborations with locals in a week's time.  Not half bad, if we do say so ourselves.

Just like Mali Music, the record is an Oxfam benefit, and as such, it would behoove you to purchase an actual copy as opposed to bending the internet to your will.  After all, it is the new year, shouldn't you start it off right?

Lissy Trullie - "Madeline"

Lissy Trullie at the DeYoung, from the HAD Archive

It's been a while since we'd heard from Lissy Trullie, so we were delighted when we discovered that she has a new record on tap for 2012.  The self titled album, which drops on March 6th, has yet to grace our ears or our inboxes. However, If the lead single "Madeline" (mp3 below) is any indication, it's gonna be a damned good one.

The track manages to channel the spirit of Nico, and set it adrift in layers upon layers of synth textures and  loping beats.  Combine that with the fact that Trullie's vocals are actually a fair bit better than the Velvet's chanteuse, and the fact that the tune has a nice unconventional composition, and well, we're sold.

The sound is a fair bit more mature than Trullie's debut: Gone are the jangly, garagey guitars, and in their place is a far more crafted and well produced record.  The effort is just as polished, but it has more individualism and clarity, and manages to shed a fair degree of the derivative moments of its predecessor. In short, exactly what you'd hope for from a second record.

Wilco Is Ready To Rock Your World This Fall

Wilco at the Greek Theater, from the HAD Archive

Hot on the heels of the first seven inch from their very own record label (see video below), Wilco have announced that (surprise of the year) the label was not created solely for that lone vinyl release. No, in fact, the band has been hard at work on a brand new record entitled The Whole Love, and will be using their label dBpm Records to deliver it to the world on September 27th.

We'll get to the record in a minute, but first: "I Might". The track is almost a toned-down take on the rock-out Wilco that created "I Am A Wheel". The lyrics are curt and clipped, and the guitars are largely fuzzed out, delivering a basic incendiary rock riff. The rest of the track is fleshed out by percussion that is unquestionably the work of Glenn Kotche, and a collective motion that we associate almost solely with Wilco. While the chilled-out influence of Sky Blue Sky is certainly present, we have to say that it's the most vigor we've heard from the quintet in quite a while.

The record itself (cover above) is comprised of 12 new tracks, and includes "I Might" in addition to 11 others. The band has previewed very little of the material as of yet, aside from a teaser trailer (below) that features snippets of what we assume to be (given the title) the lead track from the record. One has to assume this isn't for wanting to conserve new material, as the band is also issuing a deluxe edition of the disc that will feature three additional new songs, as well as an alternate version of "Black Alone".

True to form, in addition to releasing a serious amount of music, the band intends to back it up by taking their show on the road. If you're paying attention at all to live music, then you know Wilco one of the best bets going, and we can assure you that we've never walked away from a Wilco show doing anything less than grinning ear to ear. Yes, they're that good. This tour will consist mainly of east coast/midwest dates, and will be followed by a European run. We can only assume that the band has a west coast run planned for their return - time will tell.

The Whole Love drops September 27th.

Smashing Pumpkins: New Music, Fall Tour

Keeping up with Billy Corgan can be a bit of an exercise is patience and tolerance. His work as a solo artist, producer, and front man for multiple bands can get rather perplexing as one tries to figure out where his heart lies. And yet, it seems that Billy always returns to his roots, and that his heart rests, eventually, with his first band, Smashing Pumpkins.

After a few conflated reboots, it's easy to simply dismiss the Pumpkins as simply a relic of the nineties, that never really had a moment in the sun after their classic Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness. To some extent, that's true. Despite Corgan's studio and guitar prowess, the band hasn't realized anything close to it's late 90's success. Moreover, Corgan's attempt to cross genre boundaries has often fallen short, and left even the most devout fans a tad disappointed.

Such was the climate in late 2009 when longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin left the band, and Corgan started new once again. Around HAD, we're something of Corgan devotees, so despite our inclination to roll our eyes, we had to stick around and give the new material a taste. And let it be said: we're damn glad we did.

Corgan's new material began to be released in 2010 under the moniker of Teargarden By Kaleidyscope. The release was intended to be a set of 4 EPs, released digitally via the Pumpkins' online store, and then further down the road as limited edition physical releases. This was all well and good, and seemed like a solid fan-centric strategy for the Pumpkins in the wake of a number of fallen-short efforts. Then something interesting happened: the records turned out to be really, really, good.

It's tough to express how enjoyable the first two Teargarden releases are, except to say this: they're as good some of the Pumpkins' best classic moments. Granted, if you're searching for Billy's early 90's pure-shredding style, this is probably less your style. But if you're into the studio experiments and theatrics of Mellon Collie, then you are in for a treat. Across the 8 tracks thus released from Teargarden, Corgan delves into synths, orchestras, straight-ahead rock, and acoustic pop. It is a record as versatile as Mellon Collie, but with a relaxed perspective only heard previously in Corgan's work with Zwan.

Apparently we weren't alone in our perspective on Teargarden: in April Corgan announced that the future EPs would be postponed, and the band would be releasing a new "record within a record" entitled Oceania, and touring in support. Suffice it to say, we're more than a little excited to see and hear where this goes. For once, it seems that Billy Corgan has truly hit his stride, and found somewhere that he feels comfortable making awesome rock and roll. For Smashing Pumpkins fans, that's a very good thing.

Oceania is tentatively targeted for late 2011 digital release.

Tickets for the band's fall tour go on sale this Friday at noon.

Stephen Malkmus Streams Mirror Traffic, Schedules Free Shows And Contest

Stephen Malkmus at Great American Music Hall, from the HAD Archive

You may recall that Stephen Malkmus has a new record, Mirror Traffic, on it's way next Tuesday. Well, lucky for you that you don't have to wait that long. NPR has gotten ahold of the record, and is streaming it in full over at their page. But that's not all!

In addition to streaming the brand new LP, Malkmus is also looking to clean up the lyrics from its lead single. Apparently, the FCC wasn't too happy with the words "blow job" being in the tune, and it wasn't going to see radio play. As such, Matador has devised a contest to convince fans to come up with a replacement phrase for the two words. The prize is a limited edition 7" featuring your very own lyrical modification. Head here to enter.

Finally, in support of the record's release, Malkmus will be playing two NYC acoustic shows next week. On August 25th, SM will hit Academy Records at 6 PM, and Other Music at 9 PM. Long lines are not just anticipated, they're guaranteed. See you there!

New Ryan Adams Record On Tap For October

Ryan Adams at the Catalyst, from the HAD Archive

Oh my: this is the news we've been waiting for. Following his solo acoustic tour in Europe, details have emerged regarding Ryan Adams' forthcoming record. Produced by Glyn Johns, and entitled Ashes & Fire, the record is set to drop on October 11th. In addition to releasing the record, Adams will embark on a solo US tour in support, touching down in California and the Pacific Northwest. Aside from that, the only other details we have are the tracklist (below), and the fact that the record will feature guest appearances from Heartbreakers' keyboardist Benmont Tench, and longtime Adams compatriot Norah Jones. Hmm.

New Music: Appetite

California's Appetite was originally conceived by Teddy Briggs as nothing more than a songwriting project. However, it quickly blossomed and became much, much, more. The band's debut effort Scattered Smothered Covered drops on August 16th, and delivers a consolidated effort of song composition, studio intricasies and delightfully organic feel reminiscent of Feels-era Animal Collective.

The record is being accompanied by a fantastic video for the first single, "Tussy" (above), as well as a quick west coast tour that will see performances in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles (below). While we have yet to see the band live, if the record is any indication, this would be a great time to get out there and indulge in their sound. Between the loopy noise tracks, layered vocals, and insistent rhythms, Appetite is creating some of the most creative jams we've heard in a while.

Girls Third Record On The Way

Given that we were in attendance of their first show of all time, we've always had something of a soft spot for San Francisco's Girls. Given that, we were stoked to hear the news that a third record from the band will be dropping on September 13th. Father, Son, Holy Ghost is the third record, if you count last year's Broken Dreams Club. While only six tracks long, the disc contained all new material, and managed to land on Pitchfork's "Best Of" albums list.

Technicalities aside, we're excited to hear what the band will do with the space of another full length to once again stretch their legs musically. The first record, Album, followed two EPs, and expanded on them both stylistically and creatively. Frankly, we're hoping to hear the band make a sonic branch with the record, and delve into some new areas. It was apparently recorded in a San Francisco office building, so clearly they mean business. Ba dum bum. Either way, we can't wait. September here we come!

Noel Gallagher Hosts Press Conference, Two New Records On The Way

As you may have noticed, we've been enjoying the Oasis offshoot Beady Eye quite a bit. That being said, we have to admit that the absence of Noel Gallagher was a bit bothersome. Not only was Noel responsible for most of Oasis' greatest songwriting, but he's also got a killer set of pipes, and plays some amazing lead guitar. Not to mention that his restrained sense of cool adds a nice counter balance to his brother Liam's frontman showmanship. Given that, we were more than a little stoked when we heard that Gallagher had planned a press conference to reveal the details about a forthcoming project for later in the year.

While you can watch the whole conference stream via youtube (above), we'll give you the basics here. In short, the always-prolific Gallagher has penned two albums for the coming months. The first is entitled Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, and features a backing band of the same name. That record drops on November 8th. The second is an untitled collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous, and drops sometime next year. The announcement also confirmed that the band will be touring in support of the new record, and for that, you can count us among the very, very, excited.

Robert Pollard Drops "Boston Spaceships" Double Album

For someone as prolific as Robert Pollard, it's not exactly a shock to see a double album coming down the pike. However, that doesn't mean we're anything less than excited. Apparently epic to the utmost proportions, Boston Spaceships' double-album Let It Beard sees Pollard teaming with Chris Slusarenko of The Decemberists and John Moen of Guided By Voices Chris Slusarenko of Guided By Voices and John Moen of The Decemberists. In addition, the record features a whole crew of guests (including J Mascis!) to round things out. While we're not exactly sure what to expect, the preview video (below) seems to at least reveal some solid rock and roll, and for that, we're always on board!

Let It Beard drops August 2nd.

Cut Off Your Hands Set August Release Date For New Record

You may recall that two years back we were completely captivated by Cut Off Your Hands' set at Noise Pop in San Francisco. It's been a while since we've heard from the band, aside from a few studio tracks leaking on their blog, so we were psyched to get a revealing press release today about the band's latest.

Due on August 16th, Hollow is the band's second full length (cover above) and, according to the band, is a fully realized manifestation of an "expanded palette that incorporated everyone's idea's". Regardless of what you call it, if the first track is any indication, it's gonna be a doozy.

"You Should Do Better" (video above, mp3 below) takes the band's trademark sound, and lodges it with subtle doses of new sonic juice. The vocals are freed of reverb and are more natural and direct, while the playing is more restrained while still managing to deliver unquestionable forward momentum.

As though all this weren't cause for enough excitement, the New Zealand band has also noted that they had a TBD American tour on tap. That means not only do we get an awesome new record, but we get to hear it live to boot. Totally, totally, awesome!

Grooms Set To Deliver Sophomore Effort Proms

You may recall that last fall we were digging quite a bit on the debut effort from New York's own Grooms. As such, we were psyched to discover that the band has a new record on the way, entitled Proms. So far two tracks have dropped from the record.

The first, "Tiger Trees", you can download below, while the second "Prom", is currently streaming over at MTV. Both tracks are decidedly tasty, and continue the awesome blend of cacophony and melody that gave their debut such a unique vibe.

Sam Roberts Band Drops "Latitude", Featuring Lizzie Powell of Land Of Talk

We don't know a ton about Sam Roberts Band, but apparently they're quite the to-do in Quebec, and we really should be better educated. That being said, we do know that we love us some Land Of Talk. So, when it came to our attention that Lizzie Powell had decided to lend vocals to a track from the band's new record Collider, we decided to check it out.

In our minds, Lizzie can do no wrong, so we weren't exactly surprised when "Longitude" turned out to be a killer rock track, not so far divorced from Land of Talk or Broken Social Scene. Driven by a straight ahead drum beat, the track is a duet through and through, with nice atmospheric layering of synths underpinning a classic guitar rock sound.

The track (which you can check below) is pretty damn engaging, enough so that we're psyched to hear what the rest of the record has to offer. What's more, the band is on tour, and will be making national stops over the next couple of weeks. We may just have to see just want those Canadians are so damned excited about.

Jason Forrest - "Raunchy"

Jason Forrest had fallen off of our radar over the past couple of years. Not for any particular reason, but fallen off nonetheless. Maybe it's the fact that we had never caught his live set, or maybe it's just that we had felt a bit weighed down by the DJ/dance scene. Regardless of the reason, our interest was peaked when we heard Forrest had a new record entitled The Everything on the way, and that there was a track out there to be had.

"Raunchy" clocks in at about 4 minutes, and every moment of it is fantastic. In his trademark style, Forrest has juxtaposed samples with killer beats and woven it all together to yield a mix that is at once chaotic and straight ahead, with an even dose of edginess and pop sensibility. With hints of 50's surf music, and visceral keyboards and guitars ricocheting through the track, "Raunchy" is enough to get us to give Forrest's latest a good solid listen.

The Everything is available now.

Handsome Furs Preview New Record On Eve Of Tour

We already mentioned that Handsome Furs had a new record and tour on tap for the spring, and the shows kick off tomorrow night. If you happen to be wondering what the band will have in store for you, look no further: the track "What About Us" (below) has been released as the lead single from Sound Kapital, which is set to be released June 28th on Sub Pop. The tune is pretty standard Furs material, which is to say: slightly synthy, some nice drum machine action, and some bold rock and roll vibe. In short, right up our alley.

The Sea And Cake Drop New EP In May, Album On The Way

The Sea And Cake at Great American Music Hall, from the HAD Archive

Want to hear something so totally rad that it will make your night? The Sea And Cake have a new EP on the way! But wait! There's more! They're also in the studio working on another reocord! And they've released a free EP entitled "Up On The Northshore"! Yes. We agree, very, very good news.

The Moonlight Butterfly drops on 5/10. The cover art and free track are below. Win!
