Pulp: "Like A Friend"

"Like A Friend" is one of those songs that you either know and love dearly, or you've never heard in your life. It's Jarvis Cocker at his pinacle of Pulp swagger, with a healthy dose of rock and roll to boot. In other words, the best thing you've ever heard.

The song was a B-Side from This Is Hardcore, appearing on the Great Expectations soundtrack, and later as a bonus track for the record it was recorded with. The fact that it's not "actually" on the album is a bit of a travesty, as it's quite simply one of the best Pulp tunes ever.

The video (above) for the tune only ups the ante: A heavily saturated clip of Cocker & Co, with all the classic Jarvis-ness that you could possibly desire. Unfortunately, you have to endure some clips from Great Expectations, but it's well worth it.

Interestingly, the video has a different mix of the song from the album version (below), with a more drawn out second half, and production that's slightly more differentiated in terms of instrumental parts.

Regardless, both versions are absolutely fabulous. If you love it as much as we do, it's time to indulge. If you're hearing it for the first time, get yourself educated.

Absolutely great song, are there any live versions of it available on the web?
