Aside from this Friday's Crystal Ballroom date in Portland, it'd been a while since we'd heard from the guys in Spoon. So, we were psyched to see a deluge of news in the past week or so, with some exciting developments surrounding the band's new record, tour dates, and non-band projects.
First, the new record: Apparently it's well under way, and Britt Daniel is once again working with Jon Brion, who produced Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga's "The Underdog". This sounds like awesome news to us - unfortunately, according to this article, the process is somewhat in the early stages, and we probably won't see a new record until 2010. Yikes. Sadness.
So then, how do you remedy your Spoon-lovin blues? Well, for one, you go catch the band on tour. In addition to the Crystal Ballroom date, they've lined up five shows in April, traveling from Texas up to the Northeast. These dates include one at Jazzfest which includes Wilco, Kings Of Leon, and others on the bill.
Finally, if you can't make it out to one of these live dates, you may have to be satisfied listening to the band members' various solo outings. Daniel has recorded a track for the Crooked Fingers' digital-only EP Your Control, and produced an album by Brooklyn's White Rabbits. Jim Eno's Public Hi-Fi studio in Austin has just recorded the latest from Black Joe Lewis, which Eno also produced. Meanwhile Rob Pope is on tour with the Getup Kids, and Eric Harvey is hard at work on some solo material. Phew!
So, suffice it to say, there's a lot going on in the Spoon camp, even without a new record. Get out there and enjoy!
